Shatter Me By Tahereh Mafi {Trilogy Review}

Title Series: Shatter Me

Author: Tahereh Mafi

Genres: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Dystopia

I have a curse
I have a gift

I am a monster
I'm more than human

My touch is lethal
My touch is power

I am their weapon
I will fight back

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

It's actually been a while since I read Shatter Me, and two months since I finished the whole trilogy. I just really needed some time to sort through my thoughts and decide whether the ending satisfied me or not. I decided to do a series review and dedicate a paragraph or two to each book since, I don't think I would be able to put together full reviews for each book. It's usually difficult to review sequels without spoiling the previous books so, I'll do my best to explain myself without revealing any plot related information.

Starting with Shatter Me, I have to say that I loved the first book in the trilogy and re-read it a couple of times since I first picked it up. I was fascinated by Juliette's story and very heartbroken by everything she went through. The story developed very interestingly and I could not put the book down unless I reached the very last page. It was fast paced and most importantly, beautifully written. I'm going to say this a lot throughout this review but, Tahereh Mafi's writing blew my mind and made me appreciate this series even more. It just kept getting better and more magical as the story went on.

The secondary characters introduced in the series were also amazing and during Unravel Me and Ignite Me, I fell in love with them even more. Experiencing their development through the novels thanks to the author's very vivid writing was truly amazing! I also feel like Kenji is one of the best secondary characters ever written about! Definitely my spirit animal and someone I would have loved to meet in real life.

The twist at the end of the sequel was so unpredictable that, I was so shaken I actually needed a couple of days to regroup after finishing it! Something like that, mind you, rarely happens! It was unexpected and I was totally thankful for it because, truth be told, I was never a big fan of Adam and never shipped him and Juliette. The possibilities that were presented along with the ending made me incredibly happy!

Moving on to Ignite Me and probably my least favorite out of the three. Not because I didn't enjoy it or the story line. Not at all. Even after reading the last chapter and realizing that I finished the series, the whole thing felt very inconclusive. It was perfect in terms of plot and character development, action packed scenes and beautiful, magical writing but, I was expecting something more. It was very short for a last book in such an interesting trilogy that, everything in the end felt pretty rushed. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me at the beginning and why I felt this emptiness in me after finishing the book but, I finally figured thins out.

I loved how the twist from the previous book played out and the little bit of drama going on but, overall, I didn't get my closure. I feel like it wasn't an ending and it left me with more questions than I had originally anticipated. The author didn't elaborate on some very important topics and basically, Ignite Me left me hanging.

To conclude this review, I want to say that, the Shatter Me Trilogy is definitely worth reading! All of the books have this poetic feel to them that will undoubtedly make you want to keep reading in order to experience it.The flow of the story is full of a very rare harmony that you don't often come across in books. Everything comes together perfectly and the result is truly wonderful! The plot itself is very original and the characters more than likable! Plus, there's this love triangle thing going on that makes it even more interesting and spices everything up and at the same time, keeping it unpredictable!

  1. At some points I really thought Juliette to be a drama queen. But I love the world and the guys so much!

    1. I agree with you but truth be told, her behavior never annoyed me and I immensely enjoyed seeing her character develop throughout the books! I loved the guys too and I really wish Kenji could be my best friend as well!
