In a standalone hockey romance that tugs at readers’ heartstrings, a broken ex-pro learns to live and love again—all thanks to the complicated, wonderful nurse who gives him a second chance.

Brianna Collins needs to break away from her overbearing family. Her parents expect her to “fix” her brother after a series of concussions derailed his hockey career. Unfortunately, no doctor will give him clearance to play, and she’s finished with being the person they rely on to perform a miracle that will never happen. For Bree, a six-month nursing assignment at a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, is the perfect escape.

Luke Daniels, former forward for the NHL’s Charlotte Aviators, has spent close to a year rehabbing a career-threatening injury—and distracting himself however he can. Worlds collide when Luke realizes that the girl from his latest one-night-stand happens to be the new nurse at the hospital where he volunteers in the pediatric unit. What’s more, Bree’s the only person who makes him excited about life again.

Despite her initial reservations, Luke can’t help pursuing sweet, beautiful Bree. Then he realizes it was her brother whose career he ended with an accidental hit, and he falls back on the thing that’s always helped suppress his demons: alcohol. But if Luke doesn’t kick his old habits, he just may lose the one thing he loves more than hockey.

I haven't read a New Adult book in a while and Breakaway was exactly what I needed to get me back on track. Just by reading its synopsis, I could tell that it was right up my alley and wanted to give it a chance and see if I'd actually enjoy it or not. It definitely did not disappoint!

Brianna has spent her entire life trying to live up to other peoples' expectations, when she finally decides to get away and start living for herself. She finds her perfect escape in North Carolina and a nursing assignment she decides to see through. There, she meets Luke, a broken and handsome hockey player, whose career ended abruptly when he was seriously injured during a game. But, when Luke meets Brianna, sparks fly everywhere and he takes his mind off the fact that he'll never be able to play again. From the beginning, their attraction is undeniable and the chemistry they have with each other is extremely hard to ignore or even deny. And with Luke going after Bree and pursuing a happily ever after for them both, saying no is not an option.

I really enjoyed the writing style of Breakaway and the characters were very likable and easy to connect to. The plot itself didn't blow my mind, mainly because it's not something that I haven't read about before. Even though it lacked the originality that is so hard to find in the particular genre nowadays, it was quite entertaining and I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy New Adult Romance novels. The story was very fun to read and I didn't have any problems with the characters when it came to their personalities and how they interacted with each other.

Luke's behavior at the end of the book kind of annoyed me for a second, but it wasn't something that managed to put me off or make me dislike him as a character. He and Bree were perfect together, which was made quite obvious from the very beginning of the book. This was definitely an insta-love romance so, don't expect anything less or anything more from it. I don't have a problem with insta-love relationships but, I know a lot of people cannot stand them so, definitely be aware of it before you pick this one up!

Bree's brother obviously got on my nerves but, that was the whole point of him being part of the story so, I wasn't really mad about it. He could not get his shit together and continue living his life as a respectable human being. All he did was whine and let others decide his life for him because apparently, he could not do it for himself. Poor Bree went through so much for him, but nobody really appreciated her for it. Just insisted that she keeps trying for something that would never happen.

Last but not least, I expected a plot twist or something completely unexpected that would take me by surprise but unfortunately, it never arrived. I also found the ending to be a bit rushed so, I would've preferred more details on certain aspects of the story and some plot development that would keep me engrossed in it and make me beg for more. Overall, Breakaway was a pretty enjoyable read and I would recommend it to die hard fans of the genre who enjoy quick romance novels with insta-love and entertaining relationships!
